Blackberry Playbook: A Step in the Right Direction

Article first published as Blackberry Playbook: A Step in the Right Direction on Technorati.

Blackberry released its Playbook on April 19th. It has gathered mixed reaction from users around the world. While everyone agrees it won't be an iPad killer,it is being regarded as RIM's step in the right direction. It has a host of enviable features such as:
7” LCD with 1024x600 screen resolution
1GHz dual core processor
1 GB RAM
QNX OS
Adobe Flash 10.1 and HTML 5 support
3 MP 1080p HD forward-facing camera
5 MP 1080p HD rear-facing camera

Apart from the above mentioned features, it also has an HDMI port, GPS,Micro USB port, stereo speakers, and stereo microphones.
The Playbook, with its dual core processor, packs a lot of power, the screen is just as elegant. It uses the brand new QNX OS which has garnered good reviews all over. The QNX OS gives a boost to the multitasking abilities, allowing user to use more than one application at a time without closing the other. The Playbook although thicker than the iPad is still lighter than iPad making it more comfortable to use.The 3MP and 5Mp front and rear cameras are one of the better camera combinations at present. The Adobe Flash enablement gives it an upper hand over the iPad. It also handles well your Word documents and sheets.
The Playbook lacks a cellular data connection. This has been the biggest point of criticism for the tablet. It has to be tethered with a Blackberry smartphone. The Playbook also misses basic apps like an email client, calender, memo pad, etc. To access this feature you are required to create a link using the Blackberry bridge via a Bluetooth connection with a Blackberry smartphone. So it becomes almost a necessity for you to possess a Blackberry smartphone if you want to buy a Playbook. This is not going to go well with those possessing a different smartphone since they will be required to switch their phones to a Blackberry in order to use the tablet with cellular data connection(via tethering).
Also the number of applications currently present for the Playbook are too few in comparison with those present for Android Tablets and the iPad.

The Playbook seems to lack a few essential features but does manage to register a strong statement. The smaller issues are bound to be corrected in the upcoming version after which the Playbook may prove to be a tougher competition in the tablet wars. But for now its better to wait and watch rather than leap to buy one especially if you are a non-Blackberry user.
